BASIC SIG (February 7th, 2017) - VB's ByRef/ByVal (VB's "it just works" approach to CLR ref) and "All About Nullables"

Rough agenda: * Progress update: Website, Slack.NET... * Discuss ways that you can get involved, regardless of skill level. * ByVal and ByRef, what does this mean along with deeper dive of CLR ref and how VB takes this a step further. * "All About

(Re)Announcing BASICSIG!

After visiting Microsoft for the Microsoft MVP Summit in November, I was a bit “beat down”. I came to a somewhat difficult (and in my mind, somewhat shocking) realization. VB is dead! Wait, what? OK, so it requires a little explanation…

San Diego ASP.NET SIG - May 19th, 6pm

I'll be at the San Diego ASP.NET SIG on May 19th doing my LINQ in the Real World discussion. For anyone that has been at my previous "presentations", you'll know that I prefer to have more of a discussion surrounding the topic than a

Grrrr... the web.

Just so I don't forget this link, I'm posting it to here. Yes, I'm having to do some web stuff for a project I'm on and it appears that ASP.NET 2.0 "didn't like" the smart navigation feature in previous ASP.NET version(s).

Community Server - Running *another* application in the CS folder

After browsing (over and over again) through the CS forums and guessing as to what the meaning of the various answer were, I think I've found the *actual* answer to running another ASP.NET 2.0 application within an existing CS application folder.

Knee deep in ASP.NET (XboxFriends.com)

I've just completed my round one work on XboxFriends.com moving to ASP.NET and bridging the gap between the WinForms world and the WebForms world. I've still got a lot of TODO: items, but at least what's up there now looks more like a semi-professional

XboxFriends and ASP.NET vs. WinForms

Spent the weekend trudging through ASP.NET working on bringing some of the features of the XboxFriends desktop application to the browser. Currently there are only two people using the new version of the software [don't ask, it's not ready just yet ;-)]

I love global community...

I just went live the bannergen... had someone contact me from who resides in Australia via IM about the images not being able to be saved in .gif or .jpg respectively. Had yet another person take a look at it (who knows a lot more about ASP.NET than I

Web-based Gamertag/MSN Banner image generator...

I've just completed the first pass at a small web-based application that will allow you to select a banner style and enter in either your gamertag or instant messenger email address and have a generated image returned that you can 'save as' for use on

ASP.NET Web Service Tip of the Day

OK, you just built your webservice in ASP.NET and have it working as expected on your local development web server. Your ready to put it out into the wild and you follow the instructions about changing the webservice namespace from tempuri.org to whatever

In defense of WindowsForms...

Robert McLaws whines about the WindowsForms programming model , stating that “It's extremely obvious that this whole WindowsForms thing was not thought out as well as the ASP.NET side was”. Of course, this bias is based on the fact that he's coming from

Working with .TEXT (Part 4)

I finally got around to updating the overall look of the site to get it to look somewhat similar to when I was using BlogX. A couple of things to note: It would be nice to be able to specify some sort of image when adding a link to Links. Right now I

Working with .TEXT (Part 3)

Hmm... the statistics aren't updating? Cool, Kirk pointed me to a SQL script that adds the necessary trigger. Hopefully, after this post, they will be working. [update] Working like a champ now! :-D

Working with .TEXT (Part 2)

OK, finally got the email feature working. Here's the deal. There's two different places to enter an email address. One is in the blog.config file and the other is in the SQL table for config. The email doesn't appear to use the AdminEmail in the blog.config

Working with .TEXT (Part 1)

OK, I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but here goes. In order to allow newsreaders to still retrieve the RSS feed during this transition, I'm attempting to redirect the old BlogX url to the new feed. After some trial and error, I found that adding
