Sunscreen?

While this post has nothing to do with development, it is something that affects all of us.  Well, at least those that pull them selves away from their computer or game console long enough to notice that there is a really large yellow star really close to our planet ;-)

After a long weekend of being out in direct sunlight, I found myself asking "Just how exactly does sunscreen work?".  After a bit of searching, sunscreen works by chemically modifying your skin to reflect the UVB (the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn) or convert the rays into another spectrum causing heat to be reflected.  Also, I guess I would have known this if I'd read the instructions, but you should place sunscreen on at least 15 minutes prior to going out into the sun in order to allow the chemicals the necessary time to chemically react with your skin.  If also found out what SPF actually means, it's not necessarily the protection, but rather a guage that says, using SPF 15 for example, that you can stay out 15x longer than without using protection.  So if it takes you between 10-15 minutes to burn, you will be able to stay out between 2-3 hours when using sunscreen.  Therefore, one of the reasons why it's recommended to reapply every 2-3 hours. ;-)

Here's a few (somewhat) helpful links discussing "How does sunscreen work?"

This was really helpful information. I'm doing a report for my speech class on skin cancer and tanning beds and how important using sunscreen is. But I needed to know how it worked. But I do have a question, Is this information true or just found on the net? I really need to know.

For those asking who invented sunscreen...

According to http://inventors.about.com/od/inventionhistory/a/Archive_sevel.htm, "The founder of L'Oreal, French chemist Eugene Schueller, invented the first sunscreen in 1936."

However, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunscreen, "It was not until 1944 that the first effective sunscreen was invented." It gives credit to "A pharmacist named Benjamin Greene" for creating something called "red vet pet" that was used by soldiers during World War II. After the war, Greene created a more user friendly sunscreen which he began selling in and around Miami. He later went on to found Coppertone.

Wikipedia also mentions that the ancient Greeks used olive oil as a type of sunscreen.

So who invented sunscreen? Who knows. I suppose it's up to you who you want to believe.

The statement "sunscreen works by chemically modifying your skin to reflect ..." is incorrect. Sunscreen does not chemically modify your sking to reflect UVs but it creates a protective layer between the skin and the UVs.

a molecule A of sunscreen becomes a molecule B by absorbing the UV (so it protects your skin). By re-emitting energy under another form, usually heat (infrared) the molecule B goes back to a molecule A.

So this is like a cycle (roughly - actually some of the molecules B do not go back to A or becomes another molecule C that does not protect from UVs)
